SA Tree Regulations

In 2024, the Peter Malinauskas Government in South Australia implemented significant updates to its regulations on regulated and significant trees to enhance protection for the urban tree canopy, particularly in Metro Adelaide.

You can see the official PlanSA page here:

Is your tree a Regulated Tree?

1. Trunk Size:

  • Measure the circumference of the trunk at 1 metre above ground level.

  • If your trunk measures less than 100cm in circumference, it is not a regulated tree and it can be removed without approaching your Council.

  • If your trunk measures more than 100cm in circumference, it is a regulated tree. It will require Council approval and a development application

2. Proximity to Permanent Dwellings:

  • Measure the distance between your tree and your house.
