Date Palm Relocation

We take our relocations seriously - so seriously in fact, that our success rate is well above 90% over 10 years of moving large established trees across Australia.

There are a lot of moving parts, risks and mitigations involved in plucking an established tree out of the ground, and putting it back somewhere else. Failure at any point can be catastrophic if not navigated skilfully.

While we might make it look easy, and are willing to detail our process - this is not an easy task! Have a look at a date palm relocation for City of Charles Sturt below:

Here's how we do it!

1. Clean/Trim The Date Palm
   - We remove large debris with an excavator, and trim back extra material with a chainsaw.

2. Trench The Date Palm
   - We free the root ball from the earth using a trencher mounted on a skid steer, cutting the roots.
   - This enables us to lift the plant out of the ground.

3. Prepare The Destination
   - Using an excavator of appropriate size, we will dig a hole corresponding with the dimensions of the root ball to accommodate the transplant.

4. Lift The Date Palm
   - With a crane of appropriate size and capability, the date palm will be lifted out of the ground and transported.

   - For short distances, the plant can be "walked" with a crane to its destination.

   - For longer distances, the plant will be loaded onto a semi-trailer and secured for transport.

5. Transplant The Date Palm

   - The palm will be lowered into the destination hole by crane, and then backfilled with sandy loam and compost mix, 70:30 respectively.

6. Backfill Point of Origin

   -  Using an excavator and tipper, recycled earth from the destination will be brought to the point of origin to be backfilled and levelled.

7. Maintenance

   - 200L water fortnightly

   - 1L SeaStim, and 200L water monthly
